ON-GOING MISSION: 87th Place
Help Haiti Now stops by 87th when possible to help our friends who have so little. The route to 87th Place is relatively easy and takes about an hour from Montrouis or two hours from St. Marc in a small pick-up truck.
There is no electricity or plumbing and 300 people live in two houses at 87th Place. Their greatest need is water. We fill up barrels from people who have tanks and are willing share.
Before a visit to 87th Place, we go to the market to buy a one-week supply of food for them. We buy 2 large 50 kg bags of rice, half of a bag of beans, 36 sticks of soap, 12 bottles of cooking oil, and 36 bouillon cubes. We divide everything into portions for each family. The food and transportation for this distribution costs about $150.
When we arrive at 87th Place, we say a prayer, and then their chief Ester jumps on the truck to give each family a bag of food. We help with their medical needs as best we can. Before leaving we enjoy a swim in their most beautiful lagoon. ;)
