Goyavier (Go-a-vee-air)
It is not easy to get to Goyavier. The community of 10,000 people live at the top of a mountain chain. It's a steep 10-mile hike on loose rock. 99% of commuters to St. Marc go by foot (with cargo on their heads).
There is no electricity or plumbing. Cell phones don't work. Transistor radios are popular for news and music. The land is lush and many people farm and sell produce at a market twice a week.
MEDICAL CLINIC
People die in Goyavier from lack of antibiotics. We converted a house into a medical clinic and began helping the sick. A physician's assitant, Thelus Saint-Elien, examines patients Fri.-Sun and prescribes medicine for 50-100 people each week.

We are sending $200-$300 a month for Thelus to buy medicine at a pharmacy in St. Marc.

COMMUNITY SCHOOL
We have committed to support a school in Goyavier so the kids can receive an education. Our contributions defray tuition costs and students can go to school for free (in a uniform).
What we are doing:
Paying 12 teachers $40 each a month and 3 administrators $50 each a month (total=$630/month).
Built wood desk benches for 150 students and 12
teachers' chairs and tables, $600
• Printed report cards, $200

We also took hundreds of pencils, pens, erasers, and crayons in Sept. to supply the students.

500 children signed up and are attending school this year because of our funding. Last year there were only 250. Next year they expect 750 students if we continue to help. Please consider sponsoring a teacher or administrator which will give 20-35 children an elementary education.
